A politician known for her staunch support of Donald Trump has made a surprising announcement, stating she will be resigning from Congress. Marjorie Taylor Greene expressed in a video that she is stepping down to avoid a contentious primary election against her by the former president. Despite being a close ally of Trump, Greene emphasized that she will not tolerate being treated as a “battered wife” by him.
In her video statement, Greene asserted, “I have too much self-respect and love for my family to subject my district to a divisive primary campaign orchestrated by the President we once championed, only to face challenges in the upcoming elections while Republicans may suffer losses. I refuse to be in a situation where I have to defend the President post his aggressive actions against me, which is both ridiculous and frivolous.”
Greene, who previously sparked controversy by making derogatory remarks towards a Sky News journalist, had been a prominent supporter of the MAGA movement and backed Trump during his presidential bid. However, her relationship with the former president soured in recent times due to her criticisms of his policies on various issues like Jeffrey Epstein, foreign affairs, and healthcare. This strained dynamic led to her decision to resign, although she did not elaborate on her prediction of Trump facing impeachment proceedings.
Trump publicly denounced Greene, labeling her a “traitor” and “wacky,” and indicated support for a different candidate to challenge her in the upcoming elections. Nevertheless, Greene has confirmed that she will be leaving office on January 5, 2026. The White House has not yet responded to requests for comments regarding Greene’s resignation.
Greene’s departure in the face of opposition from Trump aligns her with other establishment Republicans who clashed with the former president. Despite initially embracing Trump’s bold political tactics and charisma, many moderate Republicans have found themselves at odds with his leadership style.
Trump faced further scrutiny this week following a contentious meeting with Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected mayor of New York City. Mamdani’s visit to Washington shortly after his election win raised eyebrows and added to the ongoing controversies surrounding Trump.
