A man attempted to set fire to his car after allegedly crashing into pedestrians and cyclists in a shocking incident on the French holiday island of Saint Pierre d´Oléron. Police arrested a 35-year-old suspect who shouted “Allahu Akbar” upon arrest following the attack that left at least 10 people injured, with two in critical condition.
The suspect was quickly apprehended by police, who had to use a Taser to subdue him as he resisted arrest. Authorities caught him trying to ignite his vehicle shortly after the incident. The man, who hailed from a village near the attack site, had a history of misconduct according to the mayor of Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron.
Mayor Christophe Sueur mentioned the suspect’s past issues with substance abuse. The police have initiated an attempted murder investigation into the incident. French Minister of the Interior Laurent Nuñez provided initial details, stating that several pedestrians and cyclists were struck by the motorist, leading to casualties and injuries.
Public prosecutor Arnaud Laraize disclosed that the suspect had substance abuse problems and psychiatric issues but clarified that the case was not related to terrorism. Witnesses reported hearing the man say “Allahu Akbar,” although the authorities are not treating it as a terror attack.
