“Russia Unveils Massive Nuclear Sub with ‘Poseidon’ Torpedoes”

Must read

New chilling satellite images have revealed the impressive size of Russia’s latest nuclear-powered submarine, equipped to launch devastating nuclear torpedoes. The Khabarovsk-class submarine, a new addition to Moscow’s nuclear arsenal, was captured in full scale for the first time in recent satellite photos while docked at the Sevmash shipyard workshop.

Measuring approximately 135-140 meters in length and 13.5 meters in width, this submarine is designed to fire Russia’s advanced nuclear-armed ‘Poseidon’ torpedoes. Capable of unleashing a tsunami with catastrophic power, these torpedoes can carry nuclear warheads and possess an ‘intercontinental range.’

Referred to by the Russian Ministry of Defence as a “nuclear-powered missile cruiser,” the Khabarovsk submarine is shrouded in secrecy, emphasizing its strategic importance. Although its primary armament is expected to be the Poseidon torpedoes, it may also carry land-attack and anti-ship cruise missiles alongside traditional torpedoes.

After facing delays, Putin’s new submarine was finally launched in Severodvinsk over the weekend. Defense Minister Andrei Belousov highlighted the submarine’s role in safeguarding Russia’s maritime borders and national interests with its underwater weapons and robotic systems.

Powered by a nuclear engine, the massive submarine can dive to depths of around 500 meters, enabling prolonged sea missions. The construction costs, exceeding £1 billion, have been kept confidential, indicating the experimental nature of the Khabarovsk’s design and Moscow’s guarded approach.

Another submarine of the same class, the Ulyanovsk, is currently being constructed and is expected to bolster Russia’s Pacific Fleet. Together, these submarines will provide Russia with dual-ocean capability to deploy the Poseidon system, known for its global reach.

The Khabarovsk submarine is scheduled for sea trials before joining Russia’s nuclear deterrent fleet. The Poseidon system, renowned for its disruptive capabilities, challenges conventional nuclear deterrence norms, raising concerns among arms control experts.

Putin recently announced the successful underwater testing of the Poseidon missile, emphasizing its power surpassing even the Sarmat intercontinental-range missile. This cutting-edge technology has been portrayed as a response to perceived threats, underlining Russia’s strategic posture in the face of evolving defense dynamics.
