A young boy made desperate attempts to seek help as his mother repeatedly tried to harm him, tragically leading to his death. Nathaniel Burton, a seven-year-old, lived in constant dread of his mother, Sarah Safranek, who he believed was capable of unspeakable acts. Despite Nathaniel’s pleas and warnings to his grandmothers about his mother’s intentions, social services overlooked the situation, allowing Safranek to ultimately suffocate her son to death in their home.
In the days leading to his tragic demise on February 18, 2021, Nathaniel confided in his grandmother, expressing fears that his mother was plotting to kill him. Court records revealed his profound anxiety, with Nathaniel mentioning his struggles to breathe due to his mother’s actions.
Safranek, aged 38, received a 35-year prison sentence after admitting to first-degree murder. Prior to the fatal incident, Nathaniel had disclosed to his grandmother an unsettling encounter where his mother had attempted to suffocate him while he slept.
Reports indicated that Nathaniel had previously recounted distressing incidents to his foster family and paternal grandmother, illustrating a pattern of abuse. Despite attempts by his relatives to alert child services, the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services failed to intervene effectively, having visited the home multiple times before Nathaniel’s death.
In a disturbing turn of events, it was revealed that Safranek had conducted troubling online searches related to harming children both before and after Nathaniel’s passing. Her search history included inquiries about cremation costs for children and methods of causing harm with a voodoo doll, shedding light on her sinister intentions.
The court mandated that Safranek serve her entire 35-year sentence and undergo three years of supervised release upon completion.
