“Pregnant Brit Caught with Drugs in Georgia Released”

Must read

Pregnant British woman, Bella Culley, who was caught smuggling drugs in Georgia, has been released from prison. The 19-year-old, expecting to deliver her baby in December, faced a potential jail sentence today in Tbilisi. However, prosecutors changed their initial plea deal, leading to her release instead of a two-year prison term.

Tears of joy flowed as Bella embraced her mother, Lyanne, in court and expressed her surprise at the unexpected turn of events. Walking out hand in hand with her mother, Bella excitedly informed her father over the phone that she was no longer behind bars, receiving cheers and love from her family.

Prosecutor Vakhtang Tsalugelashvili cited Bella’s age, pregnancy, good behavior, and full cooperation as reasons for the decision to release her. Bella’s lawyer, Malkhaz Salakaia, hailed the move, emphasizing that it would provide her with a more stable environment to welcome her child.

Previously facing a hefty fine as part of a plea agreement, Bella’s family had agreed to pay 500,000 Georgian Lari. The amount paid was crucial in determining the potential duration of her sentence, with the court initially requesting 800,000 Georgian Lari for her release.

Despite the earlier expectation of giving birth in jail, efforts were made, including a plea for a pardon from the prime minister, to secure Bella’s release before her delivery. Her stay in a specialized mother and baby unit within the prison was brief, with improved living conditions reported before her release.

At a recent hearing, Bella’s lawyer unsuccessfully sought bail due to her advanced pregnancy, with Bella expressing concerns about keeping her baby with her if she returned to jail. Bella, a student nurse from Billingham, Teesside, recounted a harrowing experience of being coerced into drug trafficking by threats and violence.

This development marks a significant shift in Bella’s legal saga, offering hope for a brighter future as she prepares to become a mother under more favorable circumstances.
