Business Secretary Peter Kyle has accused Nigel Farage of embodying the political ideals of Enoch Powell in today’s landscape. The criticism towards the Reform UK leader was delivered by the senior Cabinet minister during the Co-operative Party conference.
Addressing the conference in London, Mr. Kyle emphasized the necessity of achieving sustained economic growth to rebuild trust between the public and politics. He highlighted that without this growth, the far-right parties promoting disruption and division become more attractive, citing Reform UK as a current example.
Referring to Enoch Powell’s controversial 1968 speech that sparked racial tensions, Mr. Kyle drew parallels between Powell’s politics and Farage’s current stance. This is not the first time Mr. Kyle has clashed with Farage, previously criticizing his opposition to the Government’s Online Safety Act.
The conference also featured Communities Secretary Steve Reed, who emphasized the importance of uniting communities against divisive politics, specifically mentioning Reform UK as a negative influence. Reed stressed the need for building bridges among diverse backgrounds to foster successful local communities.
