A devastating tragedy unfolded as a firefighter responded to a car crash only to discover that the victim was his own son. The incident occurred in the early hours of October 26 in Sardinia, Italy, when a BMW carrying Omar Masia, 25, and four friends veered off Baldu Bridge on Baldu-L’Agnata road in Tempio Pausania, plunging 10 meters into a dry riverbed below.
Omar, who was seated in the back, was fatally crushed as the car overturned upon impact. His father, Massimiliano Masia, arrived at the scene and was among the first to find his son’s lifeless body. The other passengers managed to alert emergency services, with the driver and one passenger escaping the wreckage despite sustaining injuries.
Upon reaching the crash site, Massimiliano recognized some of his son’s friends and learned that Omar was trapped inside the vehicle. Despite efforts to revive him, Omar could not be saved. The survivors were hospitalized, with one already discharged and reported to be recovering well.
Omar, a resident of Calangianus, worked as an electrician. Antonio Giordano of the Sassari Fire Brigade described the emotional turmoil experienced by Mr. Masia, stating that the accident involving his beloved son inflicted a wound beyond comprehension.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fatal swerve that led to the tragedy. The driver, found to have exceeded the legal alcohol limit, faces charges of causing death by dangerous driving. Authorities are also looking into the road conditions near the accident site, particularly the state of the bridges in the area.
