A British tourist, aged 56, tragically passed away in the Canary Islands after falling approximately 20ft when a hotel railing collapsed. Another visitor, 54 years old, also fell and sustained serious injuries during the incident in Costa Teguise, Lanzarote early this morning.
The 56-year-old man was declared dead at the scene, while the other individual was critically injured and promptly taken to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital, where they are currently in a critical state.
The event occurred around 1:30 am when emergency services were alerted about two individuals falling from a significant height inside the hotel. The Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), local police, and the Spanish Civil Guard responded to the scene.
Reports indicate that the railing that collapsed was located in an elevated section of the hotel complex. The Civil Guard has initiated an investigation to ascertain if there was any negligence in maintaining the railing or ensuring the hotel’s safety measures.
A spokesperson from the Foreign Office informed the Mirror: “We are offering assistance to the families of the British man who passed away and the British man who was injured in Spain.”
In a separate incident in August, a British tourist in Spain suffered severe injuries after falling from a hotel balcony. The 22-year-old holidaymaker fell from the third floor of a building in Ibiza on August 18, sustaining chest and head injuries. The incident occurred at the Marco Polo hotel in San Antonio, a popular party resort.
