Allegations that Russian cyber attackers have purportedly taken possession of numerous classified military records and disclosed them on the hidden corners of the internet are presently under scrutiny by authorities.
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that it is actively examining the claims and has emphasized its firm stance on addressing cyber threats proactively.
Reports indicate that the stolen documents, allegedly obtained by Russian hackers, include sensitive information about eight Royal Air Force (RAF) and Royal Navy installations, as well as personal details of MoD personnel, such as names and email addresses, which were subsequently made public on the dark web.
As per the Mail on Sunday, the cybercriminals managed to breach the files by infiltrating a maintenance and construction subcontractor employed by the MoD.
The attack specifically targeted a third-party entity, the Dodd Group, back in September, with the hackers issuing a warning: “Time is running out – you have the opportunity to resolve this matter before inevitable consequences unfold.”
The leaked documents referenced by the publication contain details about confidential Navy and RAF bases, including RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, where the US Air Force houses its F-35 stealth aircraft.
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence stated: “We adopt a proactive and robust stance towards cyber threats that may jeopardize national security.
“We are currently investigating the alleged publication of MOD-related information on the Dark Web.
“To protect sensitive operational data, we will refrain from providing further details at this time.”
