Oleksandr Usyk has provided Tyson Fury with a significant boost by announcing his decision to continue boxing for another two years. Earlier this year, the 38-year-old outlined his retirement plan, indicating he had two fights left before retiring. In July, Usyk defeated Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium in front of over 90,000 fans, reclaiming the undisputed heavyweight champion title for the second time.
Following his victory, Usyk plans to take a break for the remainder of the year to spend time with his family before returning to the ring in 2026. He had been mandated to defend his WBO belt against Joseph Parker post the Dubois fight to avoid losing the title. However, due to medical reasons, the fight has been postponed with Usyk’s team successfully securing a 90-day extension.
In an interview with UNN, Usyk disclosed that he has resumed training with the aim of making a comeback next year. Contrary to his prior statements, he now intends to retire at 41 and establish a sports academy for training purposes. Usyk’s decision has energized Fury, who previously announced his retirement but later confirmed plans for a comeback in the upcoming year.
With Fury gearing up for his return to the ring in 2026, promoter Frank Warren expressed optimism about the potential fight. While there have been speculations about a match between Fury and Anthony Joshua, Warren emphasized that Fury’s primary focus is on a rematch with Usyk, whom he considers a formidable opponent deserving another intense battle.
