“British Tourists Warned of Delays Under New EU Entry-Exit System”

Must read

British tourists are being advised to prepare for potential delays as a new EU entry-exit system is being implemented. The system, known as the Entry Exit System (EES), requires non-EU citizens to have their passports scanned, fingerprints taken, and photographs captured before entering the Schengen area, which includes 25 EU member states along with Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. Ireland and Cyprus are exempt from this process. The initial phase of the system was put into effect on October 12.

While the checks are expected to take only one to two minutes per person, it is anticipated that there may be longer wait times at border control upon entry into the Schengen area. Travel experts suggest allocating up to four hours for navigating the new system, especially at major airports in southern Europe during the initial stages.

Minister for Aviation, Maritime and Decarbonisation, Keir Mather, has allocated £10.5 million to assist ports and operators in preparing for the new system to minimize disruptions for travelers and hauliers at busy border crossings. The implementation of the EES will be gradual over a six-month period, with varying requirements at different ports until April 2026 to reduce disruptions, particularly during peak times.

The process is cost-free, and travelers do not need to make any changes before their trips. Children under 12 are exempt from fingerprinting, but all travelers, including infants, will have their photos taken and digital profiles created. The EES aims to replace passport stamping for non-EU citizens, improve border control efficiency, and monitor compliance with the 90-day visa-free travel rule.

A government campaign was launched to inform British citizens about the upcoming changes, utilizing social media, transport operators, and travel websites. Additional information can be found on GOV.UK and FCDO’s Travel Aware pages.
