Former head coach of Wales Women’s team, Warren Abrahams, has sadly passed away at the age of 43.
Abrahams was coaching the Belgium national women’s sevens team during a tournament in Nairobi, Kenya, when he unexpectedly died.
The Belgium Rugby Federation announced the devastating news of Abrahams’ sudden death, expressing mourning and providing support to the players and staff.
The team has returned to Belgium, where they will receive ongoing psychological assistance to navigate through this difficult time.
The exact cause of Abrahams’ passing has not been disclosed.
Originally from the Western Cape in South Africa, Abrahams was a former rugby player for Durbanville‐Bellville and Stellenbosch University before transitioning to coaching.
Throughout his career, the 43-year-old had coaching roles with various teams, including Wales Women, USA sevens, England Sevens men’s team, and the Harlequins academy.
Harlequins, Abrahams’ former club, paid tribute to him on social media, highlighting his impactful contributions during his time with the Academy.
Abrahams served as Wales Women’s head coach starting in 2020, succeeding Rowland Phillips, but his tenure ended in less than nine months, marked by challenges, including the team’s winless run in the Six Nations amid the pandemic.
Ultimately, Abrahams and the WRU parted ways following his brief coaching stint with Wales Women.
