A man in his 50s was attacked by a shark while surfing in South Australia at a popular tourist spot known as The Sewer at Kangaroo Island. The incident occurred when the shark bit the man twice, causing him to sustain injuries. Despite the attack, the man remarkably drove himself to the hospital for emergency surgery.
The shark encounter took place around 1.37 pm on Tuesday, according to Shark Watch South Australia. It is believed that the shark responsible for the attack was a bronze whaler, a species commonly found in coastal and offshore waters of South Australia. Bronze whaler sharks can reach lengths of up to 3.3 meters and weigh as much as 300 kilograms.
This incident brings to light the dangers posed by sharks in the region, as another surfer previously survived a great white shark attack in the same area. The surfer described the attack as feeling like being hit by a truck when the large shark mauled him. Despite the severity of the attack, the surfer managed to make it to safety and seek help.
The victim, identified as Dion Lynch, recounted the harrowing experience of the shark biting him on his back, buttock, and elbow, while also damaging his surfboard. Following the attack, Dion expressed gratitude for surviving the encounter and hoped for a full recovery. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with shark encounters, especially in areas known for frequent shark activity.
