A video footage captured the terrifying incident where a young lion cub broke free and attacked a child in front of the child’s mother. The incident took place in Thailand on October 4, when 11-year-old Arthit Nueangnui was on the street in Kanchanaburi province. CCTV footage showed the lioness charging down the street around 9:15 pm local time and pouncing on the boy, biting his side.
A bystander, Sarawut Tokaeo, 43, intervened by hitting the lioness on the head, allowing Arthit to escape. Both the child and Sarawut were taken to the hospital for treatment and are now safe. Authorities later sedated the lioness, named Mahaesee, and took her for examination by veterinarians.
The lioness owner, Parinya Parkpoom, 32, has been charged with violating wildlife conservation laws. The penalty for this offense can include a fine of up to 50,000 baht and a maximum of six months in prison. Parinya has taken responsibility for the incident, apologizing to the families involved and agreeing to cover all medical costs. He also pledged to transfer Mahaesee to a wildlife management center.
Parinya explained that the lioness had escaped due to a broken chain while her cage was under renovation. Residents expressed relief that the lioness was removed from the area, as she had escaped previously. Sarawut, hailed as a hero for his actions, criticized the owner for negligence, while Arthit’s mother expressed gratitude for his bravery.
The mother shared her son’s traumatic experience, highlighting the emotional and physical impact of the attack on her child. She emphasized the need for her son’s full recovery and expressed gratitude for the support received. Owning lions in Thailand is legal but strictly regulated, requiring permits, registration, and compliance with safety standards.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible ownership of dangerous wildlife, as authorities continue to enforce wildlife protection laws in the region.
