Must read

Former England rugby union captain Lewis Moody has disclosed his recent diagnosis with motor neurone disease (MND) at the age of 47. Acknowledging the seriousness of the condition that claimed the lives of rugby figures Doddie Weir and Rob Burrow, Moody expressed his reluctance to fully comprehend the implications at this time.

In an interview with the BBC, Moody shared his apprehension about facing the future reality of his diagnosis, admitting the emotional challenge it presents. The former rugby star, renowned for his role in England’s 2003 World Cup triumph, alongside notable teammates like Jonny Wilkinson and Martin Johnson, also enjoyed a successful club career with Leicester, achieving multiple domestic and European accolades.

Moody’s health concerns arose when he noticed weakness in his shoulder while exercising, leading to a series of medical evaluations that identified nerve damage in his brain and spinal cord caused by MND. Despite experiencing minor symptoms like muscle wasting in his hand and shoulder, Moody emphasized his current ability to continue daily activities.

Expressing his primary concern for his family, including his sons Ethan and Dylan, Moody highlighted the emotional weight of informing loved ones about his diagnosis. Reflecting on the difficulty of disclosing the news to his sons, Moody shared a poignant moment of family support amid tears and emotional distress.

Scheduled to participate in a charity rugby match organized by Rob Burrow and Ed Slater, both affected by MND, Moody’s involvement was hindered by a knee injury. With Burrow’s passing and Slater’s current condition requiring a wheelchair and computer assistance, Moody expressed his apprehension about the future adjustments and his desire to seek support when ready.

Having represented England in 71 international matches, contributing to multiple Six Nations victories and the 2003 World Cup triumph, Moody’s illustrious rugby career also included success with Leicester and Bath in domestic and European competitions.
