Aldi has reclaimed its title as the most economical supermarket in the UK, surpassing Lidl’s previous lead. According to the latest supermarket price analysis by Which?, a basket of 75 items averaged £127.92 at Aldi in August 2025, making it 38p cheaper than Lidl, which totaled £128.30 on average with its loyalty scheme, Lidl Plus.
In July, Lidl held the top spot, but this month it slipped back to second place. The comparison list included a variety of items, both branded and own-brand, such as Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.
Tesco Clubcard members spent an average of £142.36, while non-members paid £145.01 for the same basket. Sainsbury’s Nectar card users spent £144.75 on average, compared to £149.02 for non-cardholders.
For a larger selection of 190 items, Asda remains the most budget-friendly supermarket this month. Aldi and Lidl were not part of this comparison due to their smaller product ranges. The average cost for a bigger shopping list at Asda was £474.86, which was £11.03 less than Tesco with a Clubcard (£485.89).
Waitrose was the priciest option, with the smaller basket averaging £172.61 and the larger one totaling £548.14.
Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented, “Aldi has reclaimed its position as the UK’s most affordable supermarket in August, offering excellent value without the need for membership fees. Asda stands out as the cheapest non-discount supermarket for larger grocery trips, outperforming Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons. With increasing expenses as the seasons change, households can find savings by choosing their supermarket wisely, potentially saving up to 35%.”
