Nigel Farage faces criticism for alleged discriminatory remarks suggesting that heterosexual couples are more likely to maintain stable relationships. The leader of Reform UK came under scrutiny following comments made by MP Danny Kruger, who recently switched allegiance to the party.
Kruger, known as the son of Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith, expressed his views at a conservative conference in 2023, stating that heterosexual marriages were essential for a secure and prosperous society. When questioned about his stance within the Reform party, Farage emphasized the importance of stable parental figures for children, asserting that enduring relationships typically involve opposite-sex partners.
In response, Labour MP Nadia Whittome condemned Farage’s remarks as “vile homophobia,” denouncing his attempt to reignite contentious discussions on same-sex marriage and adoption to sow division and animosity. A representative from Stonewall emphasized the diversity of modern families and stressed the significance of a nurturing and supportive environment for children’s well-being and development.
Citing data from the Office for National Statistics, divorce rates in 2023 were marginally higher for men than women across all marital unions. Notably, dissolution rates for same-sex civil partnerships varied between male and female partners.
Following Kruger’s defection to Reform, a Labour spokesperson criticized Farage for aligning with former Conservative members, suggesting it does not absolve him of past failures. Kruger joins a list of ex-Tory MPs, including Nadine Dorries, Dame Andrea Jenkyns, and Sir Jake Berry, who have joined Farage’s ranks. Farage’s spokesperson referenced research from the National Library of Medicine highlighting the critical roles of both mothers and fathers in child development.
