“Virgin Media O2 and Age UK Join Forces for 3G Transition Support”

Must read

Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are collaborating to support older individuals as the UK transitions from 3G to faster and more reliable 4G and 5G services. The shutdown of 3G networks by major UK providers like EE, Vodafone, and now O2 may impact some users, particularly older and more vulnerable customers who have not upgraded their devices. To address this issue, Virgin Media O2 and Age UK are working together to raise awareness about the 3G switch-off.

Caroline Abrahams, Charity Director at Age UK, emphasized the importance of supporting those affected by the transition. O2 is set to complete the disconnection of its 3G signal by the end of the year, affecting users with non-4G or 5G compatible devices who may lose access to services like WhatsApp.

The process of shutting down 3G networks has already commenced, starting with towns like Durham, Norwich, Telford, and Guildford, with Torquay next in line before the complete network closure. Virgin Media O2 and Age UK aim to provide additional assistance to older mobile phone users who need to upgrade their handsets.

Age UK will offer in-person awareness sessions for disadvantaged older individuals, extending support to customers using network providers such as Giffgaff, Tesco Mobile, and Sky Mobile. Virgin Media O2 will directly contact customers without 4G or 5G devices, offering free compatible devices to vulnerable users and discounts on new handsets for others.

Customers with 3G-only phones will still be able to make voice calls and send texts after the switch-off, as these devices support 2G networks. The impact of the transition is expected to be minimal, with less than 2% of network data currently relying on the 3G network.

For those concerned about the change, support is available through providers or by contacting Age UK’s Advice Line. It is essential to ensure readiness for the transition to avoid any disruption in mobile services.
