“Free TV Licences for 1950 Born Seniors: How to Apply”

Must read

Thousands of individuals born in 1950 could now qualify for a complimentary TV licence starting this year. Persons aged 75 or above who receive Pension Credit are eligible for a free TV licence, which currently costs £174.50. Upon reaching 75 years old and claiming Pension Credit, one can request a refund for any remaining months on their TV licence post their 75th birthday, provided there is at least one month left on the licence. Possessing a TV licence is mandatory for watching or recording live TV, or viewing any content, be it live or catch-up, on BBC iPlayer. However, a TV licence is unnecessary if only watching shows on catch-up via non-BBC iPlayer streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5. Nonetheless, a TV licence is required for watching live TV programs through these streaming platforms to avoid fines of up to £1,000, or £2,000 in Guernsey.

It is estimated that around 800,000 eligible households miss out on Pension Credit each year, designed to enhance weekly income. The primary component of Pension Credit is the “Guarantee Credit,” which boosts weekly income to £227.10 for singles and £346.60 for couples. To qualify, the income must typically fall below these thresholds, although eligibility may still exist for individuals with higher income levels due to disabilities, caregiving responsibilities, or housing costs. Additional entitlements under Pension Credit are available for caregivers, severely disabled individuals, and those caring for children or young persons. The “Savings Credit” segment of Pension Credit caters to individuals who reached state pension age before April 2016, requiring earnings above £198.27 for singles and £314.34 for couples, providing up to £17.30 weekly for singles and £19.36 for couples.

Moreover, Pension Credit unlocks various financial assistance avenues, such as free dental care and vouchers for eyeglasses or contact lenses, with an average annual award exceeding £3,900. Eligible individuals can apply for Pension Credit via GOV.UK, by calling 0800 99 1234, or by completing a paper application form, up to four months before reaching state pension age.
