Ian Wright believes Ineos have “bit off more than they can chew” after watching Manchester United lose again at Old Trafford.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, founder of Ineos, opted to buy into the Premier League giants and take control of their footballing operations, but has overseen a number of blunders with the team continuing to go backwards under his leadership.
United are on course to surpass last season’s failings and deliver a worst ever Premier League season. Ruben Amorim has recently come in to replace Erik ten Hag but that hasn’t led to an upturn in results and the current manager presided over another defeat on Sunday.
Brighton left Old Trafford with all three points as Ratcliffe was left to watch his outfit lose yet again. Amorim declared that they were “maybe the worst team in Manchester United history” with Wright admitting the owners do not appear up to the task.
He said: “Ineos. Yeah I think so. I think they bit off a lot more than they could chew, Ineos. I don’t know if they realised what was happening when they were going to go to Man United and try to change what’s happening there, especially with the Ten Hag tenure. We’re talking about like 600 million pounds they spent in three years, and they still got to rebuild a whole team for this guy.”
Ratcliffe has made a number of questionable calls, on and off the pitch, which has seen his decision making criticised. He opted to retain Ten Hag as manager before sacking him months later whilst sporting director Dan Ashworth was hired and then dismissed within months.
A new look hierarchy, featuring the likes of Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox, haven’t been able to improve the club’s fortunes on the pitch.
Ratcliffe has also presided over a huge staff overhaul, making numerous people redundant and cutting employee benefits. Wright has also called out the British billionaire for his attitude towards the women’s side, claiming they were an afterthought.
He said on women’s football podcast Crossways : “When you hear murmurings of Man United saying ‘once we sort out the men’s, we’re gonna focus on the women’s’ – when is that going to be? You look at the men’s and how far they are off it at the minute. When are they actually going to take notice of the women’s? I genuinely believe, especially with how Man United Women are playing, they do not care. They genuinely do not care enough.”
