Melania Trump baffles inauguration viewers with unusual outfit choice

Must read

Melania Trump caused a fashionable stir when she arrived to watch her husband get sworn in as the president of the United States a second time.

On Monday, 78-year-old Donald prepared to be officially announced as the 47th American president. A ceremony was held in Washington DC where the returning president was supported by his family – including 54-year-old wife Melania.

The former model arrived at the St. John’s Church for the start of the inauguration events on Monday. Wearing a dark coat designed by luxury womenswear designer Adam Lippes and a hat by award-winning designer Eric Javits, the returning First Lady drew approval from fashion fans.

Many took to social media to compliment Melania on her style choices. One wrote on X: “Melania looks so first Lady. Love it!” And another commented: “She looks stunning.”

Some fans felt the model looked regal, with one writing: “Melania is channeling princess Diana.” While another approving social media user typed: “Melania looking is looking so fierce today! I think she communicates so much with her wardrobe choices.”

However, others felt that the dark colour choices suggested the First Lady was dressed for a more sombre event. One wrote: “Melania looks like she’s dressed for a funeral.” Another agreed, writing: “Who told Melania there was a funeral today?”

While another joked: “Melania ‘s outfit. She looks Smooth Criminal era Michael Jackson at a funeral.”

The ceremony is a historic one as Trump stands out as a relatively unique President. He is the only politician since Grover Cleveland to enter the White House for a non-consecutive second term. Trump first won the presidency in 2016 and was in office from 2017 until 2021.

While his election bid in 2020 failed, he stormed to victory in 2024 and has now vowed to make drastic changes to the way America is run in his second term. The 2025 inauguration is being held indoors for the first time since Ronald Reagan’s second inauguration in 1985.

Temperatures in the American Capitol city have hit sub-zero levels – but there is expected to be some sparkle to the order of events as a string of singers are to take to the stage. Former American Idol winner Carrie Underwood is due to perform America the Beautiful moments before Trump is sworn in.

Classical tenor Christopher Macchio will sing the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. Grammy-winning singer Lee Greenwood is also set to perform as part of the ceremony.

The country music singer told NPR: “I am humbled and honoured to be asked to perform for our 47th President Donald J. Trump during his inaugural events. The President has been a friend of [my wife] Kim [Payne] and I’s for many years and this is one of the most historical moments in our lifetime. I look forward to celebrating this special day with proud Americans everywhere.”
