A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has hit the region near Antarctica in the well-known Drake Passage, causing shockwaves to be felt as far as Chile. The seismic event occurred at 8:29 pm as reported by the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.
The US Tsunami Warning System has indicated that there is a potential for tsunami waves affecting coastlines within a 1000km radius of the earthquake’s epicenter in the Drake Passage. Consequently, the Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service of the Chilean Navy (SHOA) has issued a tsunami alert for the southern shores of Chile post the evening earthquake.
An earthquake map displays the exact location of the seismic activity at 8:29 pm, around 153 miles off the Antarctic coast. The epicenter was situated at a depth of 10km (6.2 miles) according to the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences.
