A woman who had been missing for nearly three decades and was allegedly confined to her childhood bedroom has spoken out about her ordeal.
Identified as Mirella, now 42 years old, she vanished at the age of 15 in 1998 and was kept isolated inside her parents’ apartment for 27 years. Police found her in a critical state just before her potential death, with severe injuries and in a malnourished condition.
Initially, her parents claimed she had disappeared, then stated she had been kidnapped, and no one questioned their story until police made a shocking discovery this summer. Concerns arose when neighbors reported hearing unusual sounds from the apartment, leading to the police finding Mirella in distress.
Mirella had been deprived of basic necessities like dental and medical care, and even simple activities such as visiting a hairdresser or going for a walk. She was confined to a small room in the apartment, cut off from the outside world by her parents.
Despite being rescued by the police in July and spending two months in the hospital fighting for her life, details of her harrowing experience are only now emerging. A fundraiser has been initiated by locals to support her recovery.
Photographs from inside the apartment show a frozen-in-time room where Mirella spent decades, surrounded by childhood toys. Her mother, in a statement to local media, mentioned past outings but struggled to recall specifics.
Following her rescue, a criminal investigation has been launched, although the legal consequences for Mirella’s parents remain uncertain. The investigation aims to determine if any crimes were committed against her during her confinement.
Neighbors expressed shock upon learning the truth about Mirella’s situation, highlighting the mysterious circumstances surrounding her disappearance. Police, however, have stated that there is no evidence suggesting she was forcibly held in captivity.
